What is a Green Card?

Since leaving the EU at the start of 2021, if you are planning on driving in the EU, you will require a Green Card for proof of vehicle insurance. You can read more here.

 

Where can I get a Green Card?

You can request your Green Card from your current Broker or Insurer, please allow 6 weeks notice. They will then either post your Green Card or tell you how to download and print your Green Card yourself. 

 

When do you need to show your Green Card?

• If you are involved in an accident
• If you are stopped by the police
• At the border

 

What is the update for Green Cards?

From the 2nd August 2021, the UK is now able to take part in the “Green Card Free Circulation Zone Area”, also known as “GCFCA”. 

 

What are the Free Circulation Zone Area Countries?

Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Slovakia and Slovenia.

Please note some insurers will still require you to request a Green Card for the time being.  In addition to this, some insurers will need to be notified if you are taking a vehicle outside of the UK regardless of whether a Green Card needs to be issued or not.

 

What EU Countries aren’t in the Free Circulation Zone? 

Albania, Azerbaijan, Belaurus, Iran, Israel, Moldova, Morocco, Russia, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine. 

Any countries outside of the EU, you will also require a Green Card.
