PENDLESIDE CORPORATE CHALLENGE 2019
This year, Spencer Hayes Group decided to take part in the Pendleside Hospice Corporate Challenge. The Corporate Challenge is where businesses around Lancashire sign up to the challenge and are given £50 each to raise as much money as possible. This year, 50 businesses signed up to the challenge! The games begin June 1st and runs until the end of September.
Who are Pendleside Hospice and what do they do?

Pendleside Hospice philosophy of care is to promote and enhance the quality of life for those who have life-limiting illnesses. Pendleside deliver specialist and holistic palliative care. Each person is assessed for the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs. The care that they provide is free of charge. Find out more about what Pendleside Hospice do here.
The Challenge.
Due to Spencer Hayes Group growing rapidly in the past year, it became more and more difficult for the team to create fundraising ideas. With several changes across the company, it was only in the last month of the challenge where they finally decided to spring into action.
Phoebe Wright, Spencer Hayes Group Marketing Manager, joined the business on the 9th September. Which didn’t give her a lot of time to raise money for Pendleside. However, the entire team put their thoughts and efforts together to plan their fundraising event. The Commercial Insurance Brokerage, based in Rawtenstall, decided to organise a Fundraising Race Night with a twist. The team at Spencer Hayes Group also gathered unused clothes and shoes and managed to fill up 27 bags! With every bag that you donate, £3.50 is added to the grand total.
The Plan.
The big Fundraiser Race Night was on the 27th September with just over 2 weeks of planning. Amazing food provided (pies and peas), prizes at the ready and people actually turned up at such short notice! Spencer Hayes hosted the event at Turf Moor, thanks to Paul Walsh and the team for making it possible. 8 businesses across Lancashire sponsored the races which gave us plenty of prizes to give away.

What’s the twist?!
The twist to the event is what got the money coming in. Marc Kirker agreed to wax his entire chest. You can view the video below. Trust us, this is something you don’t want to miss!
If you didn’t watch the video, everyone started throwing money in the bucket to rip off their own strip of wax. Phoebe bought a professional hot wax kit, not just any wax strips you buy from the supermarket. This made the entire night for everyone that attended, well apart from Marc… One person paid £50 alone to make sure Marc had absolutely no hair left! People thought it would be extra funny to slowly peel off the wax. All that we can say, Marc really took one for the team and for Pendleside Hospice. The event truly was a hilarious success!
Marc’s Revenge…
However, Marc wasn’t going to leave until he had his revenge. BCW Manufacturing Group created a “Pie Face” challenge for the Pendleside Hospice Corporate Challenge, where you donate £3 with every splat you make. You can nominate 3 people once you have been Pie Face’d, and the best thing was, you can nominate anyone! Your friends, family or boss! Prior to the event, Marc asked permission to Pie Face 3 people (as he wasn’t nominated) to get his payback. However it didn’t end well for Marc, yet again, as the three people who was Pie Face’d just simply threw the pie back in his face! You can watch the video below…
Lets Celebrate!
Pendleside Hospice then arranged a huge celebration dinner for everyone who contributed towards this fantastic cause and took on The Corporate Challenge, with a wide range of awards. This year, the awards night was on 1st November at the Mechanics in Burnley along with a dress to impress theme. The entire venue was filled with companies across the North West. Spencer Hayes Group managed to bag two tables and brought 20 people along to celebrate. Several surprises came during the awards night, Jason Rea was walking around fascinating everyone with his magic tricks. A lucky chocolate coin on every table to win the table ornament, along with auctions and lucky dips!

The Result.
The time came around where the awards began. It seemed like the longest wait before the LOL Award came up! Watch this video to watch the announcement unfold…

That’s right – Marc Kirker’s pain and suffering paid off. If you didn’t watch the video, the entire room got to watch the video and have a laugh all over again! I’m sure Marc didn’t mind re-living the moment while holding his trophy for all of his efforts.. And chest hair!
The Grand Total.
With everyone’s efforts and contributions, we managed to raise a huge total of £146,328 for Pendleside Hospice! To keep the Hospice up and running each year it costs around £4M, the hospice relies on people’s generosity and contributions as the government only provides 22% of what they require.
Going forward…
On the 10th December, all of the winners were invited to the Hospice for a winners breakfast and to discuss plans for next year. Marc and Phoebe had an amazing morning and already have some great plans in place. If you would like to apply for the Corporate Challenge in 2020, click here!
